IРІР‚в„ўve been meaning to try a yeasu desk mic The technician did not say that *any* microphone might damage the rig but that the 6pin MH-36 could - because it connects differently than required according to the manual. Buttons on rig have no function and the UP-button on the mic really triggers the up-scan. Analysis of the schematics on connecting a 6pin MH-36 to the FT-991A results exactly in the error condition which I experienced. I got only 1 rig - not hundreds on my bench. But the technician certainly spoke out of experience which I do not have. If I compare the schematics correctly I would rather suspect a damage to the microphone than the rig. and I think that the pin numers are also upside down in this schematic. According to Yaesu pin 8 is left and pin 1 on the right if viewed 'from' the front panel. Unfortunately the author got the pin numbers upside down. The problem with the MH-36 is that it is *not* connected according to the schematic.Р”Р„nd here the pinout of the MH-36E8J. As long as everything is connected according to the schematic there ought not to be a problem. That is certainly there for the benefit of those OMs who like to adapt their own mics.

The FT-991A manual page 17 shows the mic connector's pin-out. The desk mic, which Yaesu offers as option for the FT-991A is the MD-200A8X. I got a telephone interface but have no plans to connect it to my landline - no use anymore with Smartphones. The MH-36 I put aside and am not very sad about it since there are no repeaters in ZP anymore and DTMF isn't really necessary for me. To remedy the situation I just used the original MIC-31A8J which came in the box together with the radio.

At least it will be easier to program the memories now. I was able to copy and paste the memories from my handheld to the 991A and upload those, so I haven't lost everything, just almost everything. They grabbed my file and it wouldn't work on their system, either. Something corrupted the file! I can look at it with WordPad and see some of my stuff in there, like the content of my CW memories, but it will *not* load! I got a hold of RTS tech support. Then I did the master reset, tried to open the memory file and got an error.

I got the RT Systems software, installed it on my PC, connected the radio, powered it up, and low and behold it was able to download and save the memories and menu settings, just like I do for my Yaesu handheld. The memory channels were well filled with repeaters all over the state as well as separate CW, SSB, and DATA memories for HF. I'm still running the 2018 firmware and I had changed nothing on the radio when it stopped working. Just to make sure everybody understands, I hadn't done any updates.
